Dear Fellow Golf Professional:
ARE YOU AMBITIOUS? I’m sure your answer is a resounding YES!
Ambition is one thing…and it’s important…but knowing how to succeed in this incredibly competitive business is another.
Early in my career, just after leaving the University of Houston where I was on the golf team, I tried to earn my Tour Card. And like many college players, I didn’t make it. I missed it 2 years in a row.
So…after failing to achieve ‘the dream’ I was an aspiring golfer with a college degree and not much else. I was offered a great job in real estate but I loved the game and wanted to remain in golf—and make a great living in the business.
Fortunately, I made TWO really important and life-changing decisions very early in my career.
- I set a goal of being the best in the business.
- I decided to seek out the best and learn from them.
I’ve been extremely successful in the golf business.
- The Jim McLean Golf School has grown from nothing to eleven locations. We do the most revenue of any golf school.
- Three of my students, Lexi Thompson, Erik Compton, and Keegan Bradley are among the hottest young professionals in the game.
- My professional students have won over $217 million on tour.
- Golf Digest and Golf Magazine have consistently ranked me among the world’s top 3 teachers for two decades.
- When I was a club pro, I routinely earned more than $100,000 a year—and that was over 25 years ago.
- My books and videos including the ‘X-Factor’ and the ‘Eight-Step Swing’ are among the top sellers in all of golf publishing. I’ve written a total of 11 books.
If I can achieve this level of success, then you can too. You simply need to know HOW to become successful.
I understand your frustrations and I can help…
I’ve been the assistant to the assistant. I’ve picked range balls. I've caddied. I’ve dug up crabgrass on the range. I’ve endured 'golf rage' from country club members and I understand all the frustrations and challenges you face as a club pro or teacher.
- Not enough lesson business.
- Too much time at the club or teaching facility and not enough time with family.
- Price resistance.
- Not getting promoted or getting top jobs at other clubs.
- Not knowing how to market yourself.
- Arriving before dawn and leaving after dusk…day after day after day…with little acknowledgement and poor pay.
- NOT PLAYING ANY GOLF!
I’m sure you could make a long list of the modern frustrations that golf professional have to endure.
And here’s what really upsets me…I meet golf professionals who are losing their love for the game. And with this loss, they’re also losing precious time with friends and family.
Back when I was club pro in the New York Metropolitan area, I coached the Little League teams my sons played on during the summer season.
And today, even though my schedule tends to be hectic, I play golf and my passion for the game, its people, and its places is stronger than ever.
I can’t wait to get to one of my schools. I can’t wait to help people get better at golf. I’m really excited to work with new teachers. I love watching golf on TV. I’m excited to get a new driver and try it out.
Yes—you’ve seen me on The Golf Channel and I teach top players and so on…
BUT
I’m still the kid who grew up in Seattle, playing with my dad, working at the range…just loving every minute of being part of the game.
Yes…I get frustrated at times and yes…running everything I run is a challenge but I’m more enthusiastic about golf than ever. And I’ve been a club and teaching pro since 1975 when I started at Westchester CC, where I stayed in the staff dormitory and ate in the staff cafeteria with the janitors, maids, and cooks.
When I started at Westchester, I knew very, very little about being a successful golf pro.
BUT
I quickly set a goal…
ACCUMULATE AS MUCH KNOWLEDGE ABOUT BEING SUCCESSFUL IN GOLF AS POSSIBLE…
Yes—I read all the books but I went out of my way to find and spend time with the golf pros and teachers who are now legends—and rightfully so…
Meet Some of the Greatest Golf Minds of All Time
Early in my career, I spent serious time with:
-Jackie Burke -Al Mengert -Coach Dave Williams
-Ken Venturi -Carl Welty -Gene Sarazen
-Tom Kite -Bruce Lietzke -John Mahaffey
-Fuzzy Zoeller -Bill Rogers -Jimmy Ballard
-Bob Toski -Harvey Penick -Jim Flick
-Hank Haney -Mike Hebron -Craig Harmon
-John Jacobs -David Leadbetter -Dave Love II
-John Redman -Ben Doyle -Gary Wiren
-Mac O’Grady -Gardner Dickinson -Paul Runyan
-Harry Cooper -Butch Harmon -Claude Harmon
-Nelson Long -Dennis Satyshur -John Kennedy
I remember being with Jackie Burke and he taught me an extremely valuable lesson.
“McLean – is there a perfect position at the top of the backswing?” After a long pause, I replied:
“Some positions are better than others.”
“McLean, how stupid are you?”
“Well, fairly stupid.”
“Take the top five money winners each year on tour and you’ll see five different positions at the top. If all you had to do to play great golf was swing to the top with the club pointed at the target and a square clubface, then everybody could be great in a month.”
Jackie’s point was that if you try to teach everyone like they’re the same, you’re doomed to fail in the golf teaching business. A single lesson from Jackie provides the teaching foundation of my teaching today.
I met Carl Welty in 1966 and we spent hours analyzing swings. In 1979, Carl and I made a tape of golf’s greatest players. It took weeks of 16-hour days to find the common denominators among the true champions. Here’s what I learned from Carl:
"He who does little research has little to teach"
My success in golf is no accident. It’s not luck. It’s not ‘being in the right place at the right time’ although that helps!
The foundation of my success is KNOWLEDGE.
I read like crazy. I took lessons. In fact, I spent so much money taking lessons early in my career that I was flat broke at age 30. That’s right…to learn how to teach, I took hundreds of hours of lessons.
Now…I’m not necessarily recommending that you take all those lessons and I’m not recommending you go broke.
BUT
I HIGHLY RECOMMEND you gain the knowledge you need to be part of the elite golf pros and teachers who earn 90% of the revenue in our business.
And for the first time, I’m making my knowledge available to you—the ambitious club and teaching professional.
I’ve compiled a system… The 18 Keys to Success and Profit for the Teaching and Club Professional.
It’s everything I know about how to be successful in our business. You’ll discover what I learned from those golf professionals above and you’ll discover what I’ve learned from business greats like Charles Schwab, Henry Kravis, and George Roberts.
You’ll also discover how I based my business model on a visit to the top orthopedic doctor in New York.
It’s an awesome model! I have ELEVEN schools and thousands of happy students and my schools are thriving—even in this recession. In fact, while other schools are closing, I’m OPENING new schools.
"I worked for Jim McLean in the Doral Office. Nobody is more enthusiastic or focused on being great. His staff and teaching concepts are the best in the world." Cristie Kerr #1 ranked Player in the World

P.S. I want to stress something…we’re both golf professionals.
People pay us to be golf professionals and do what we do.
The difference between me and you might be that I was the highest paid club professional in the New York Metropolitan Section. Before serving at Sleepy Hollow I was the Director of Golf at Sunningdale CC before moving up to the famous Quaker Ridge GC (in Scarsdale, NY). Then finally to Sleepy Hollow where I taught the Rockefeller family and the elite business professionals in America. I left Sleepy Hollow to run my own golf schools at Doral Resort and Spa in Miami where we now have 24 teachers in the winter months and 9 PGA Assistants.
And I’m happy to share my knowledge with you.

"I have had three hearts and I've worked on my game at Doral since age 12. I qualified for the PGA Tour in 2012. Jim's operation is a thing of beauty and I've learned so much being there." Erik Compton, PGA Tour member, Ben Hogan Award recipient, and ESPY winner
